New Patient Exams

We want to get to know you, your history, and what brings you to our office. We want to know if you have any concerns or specific dental goals, so that we can better serve you.

New patient exams include:

  • Head and neck cancer screening
  • Periodontal tissue exam
  • Complete radiographic examination of all teeth
  • Laser testing for cavities
  • Thorough examination of oral tissues and teeth by our Registered Dental Hygienist, and then is repeated by Dr. Sutherland

If no periodontal disease is present, a regular cleaning may be completed at this appointment if time allows.

During your appointment, you will receive a diagnosis of any disease present, documentation with pictures and x-rays, and plenty of question and answer time with Dr. Sutherland and the Nixa Dental team.

Together, you and Dr. Sutherland will discuss your treatment options, pros/cons of each, and make a treatment plan that fits your goals and keeps you healthy.

We will also go over the details of your specific financial considerations, including any insurance or payment methods you may use. Then, we will find a day and time that works for you to get the treatment you desire.

Regular Exams

Beautiful Woman at Nixa dental Chair

Exams are performed every 6 months by Dr. Sutherland. She provides a free head and neck oral cancer screening, reviews your x-rays, checks the tissue in your mouth, and your teeth. Dr. Sutherland will listen to any concerns you may have and also thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to address any problems before they cause you pain. She will also answer any questions you have and will work with you to find a plan for keeping you healthy, pain free, and looking your best.

Adult and Child Cleanings

Our Registered Dental Hygienist will discuss any concerns you may have, as well as your areas of sensitivity. We will first take any x-rays prescribed by the doctor, and take intraoral HD photographs of the teeth and mouth as needed.

Then, we measure your gum health and check for periodontal disease by measuring the gum tissue surrounding each tooth. We then use an ultrasonic irrigation system and specialized tools to remove stain, calculus, and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Next, we will smooth the surface of the teeth with a polishing paste, and then floss between each tooth.

When the teeth are clean, our hygienist will use a laser cavity detector, Diagnodent, to test any suspicious or high-risk areas for cavities.

Lastly, we will provide you with an in-office fluoride treatment to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.

If you are due for an exam (usually every 6 months), Dr. Sutherland will perform the exam at the end of this appointment.
